Keiki Program
About
Our Keiki, Keiki being the Hawaiian word for child, Outrigger Paddling Program introduces kids to the exciting world of outrigger canoe paddling in a fun, safe, and supportive environment. Designed for a variety of ages, the program focuses on building water confidence, teamwork, and physical fitness while instilling the cultural values and traditions of outrigger paddling.
Through hands-on instruction and engaging activities, keiki learn proper paddling techniques, water safety, and the importance of working together as a crew. Whether they’re brand new to paddling or looking to improve their skills, every child is encouraged to challenge themselves, respect the ocean, and most importantly—have fun.
We believe that outrigger paddling is more than just a sport; it's a way to connect with the ocean, with each other, and with the heritage that makes it so special. Join us on the water and let your keiki discover the joy of paddling!
PRogram
Our keiki program is designed for children ages 8-16 while children 17+ are welcome to practice with our adult novice program. The program will start in May and run thru August and will include a practice each weekend. We will focus on outrigger canoe paddling but also teach water safety, concepts of Polynesian culture and tips on how we can take care of the ocean and our beaches. To participate in this program it is required that the children know how to swim before getting in a canoe. We will compete in local San Diego races that have keiki divisions. Cost is $150 per paddler for the year. Cost includes a race jersey. First practice is free.
Meet Up
We will meet once a week on Sundays as this program starts building. Date and time are subject to change based on coach availability and club race schedule. Meet at the North Cove Public Parking lot on Vacation Island on Mission Bay. Scroll down to find directions. Once everyone has checked in, paddles will be distributed and we will walk to the canoes together
Coaches
The head Keiki Coach will be Brittani Summers and she'll have a small team of assistants helping to run practices. All coaches are active club members in Kai Elua OCC and have years of experience both with paddling and with children. Email Coach Brittani with any questions. brittani.summers@gmail.com
What should I bring to practices?
Bring water, wear sunscreen and clothes that can get wet. A hat and sunglasses are recommended. Bring a towel and change of clothes for after practice. We provide instruction, paddles and the canoes. For the parents, bring a chair and join us at the beach. If youth paddlers are dropped off and they have a phone, they can store phone and other belongings at the beach. We recommend NOT bringing phones in the canoes.
WHERE DO WE MEET?
We meet at the parking lot on the north side of Vacation Isle before entering Paradise Point. We will gather in the parking lot before walking towards the canoes past the North Cove Public Beach that is a part of Paradise Point. Paradise Point is located at 1404 Vacation Rd, San Diego, CA 92109.
After turning left onto Vacation Rd. Turn right just before entering the resort.
